WHO WE ARE

Our chapter of National Honor Society promotes these within the community of the High School, Somersworth, and greater New Hampshire. All students within National Honor Society need to display that they employ the above pillars by having a 3.5 grade point average, fulfilling at least 20 hours of community service as well as 20 hours of tutoring within the high school, showing they have high standards of character, and promote leadership within their communities. As an organization, while our students have to show they employ these four pillars, we also look to promote all of these within the school communities. We take our roles in service, academia, and leadership seriously, and hope to help out other students who would like to be accepted into National Honor Society.

OUR HISTORY

The National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) officially established NHS in 1921. Though many local and regional honor societies existed prior to 1921, no nationwide organization had been founded. Under the leadership of Dr. Edward Rynearson, principal of the Fifth Avenue High School in Pittsburgh, the organization grew from the original Alpha Chapter at the Fifth Avenue School to more than 1,000 chapters by 1930. Equipped with a constitution, an emblem and motto, and a group of dedicated principals as coordinators, the new NHS organization quickly developed into one of the country's leading educational groups.
